New Video - Parralox - Human

New Video - Parralox - Human (The Human League Cover)
This weeks new video is the classic The Human League track "Human", taken from our new album Holiday '19.

"Human" is a song recorded by British synthpop band The Human League, and released as the first single from their 1986 album Crash. The track, which deals with the subject of infidelity, was written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

In 1985, the recording sessions for the Human League's fifth album were not going well, and the band did not like the results, which was causing internal conflict. Virgin Records executives, worried by the lack of progress from their at-the-time most profitable signing, suggested the band accept an offer to work with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who already had material to work with; and had expressed an interest in the band from their U.S. releases. Jam and Lewis had recently emerged as in-demand talent due to their success with Janet Jackson and her Control album.

Of the ten songs on Crash, Jam and Lewis wrote three, "Human" being one of them. It is a mid-tempo ballad which lyrically is an exchange between a man and a woman in a relationship who have reunited after a separation. In the first two verses Philip Oakey is apologizing to his partner for being unfaithful during her absence, and in the song's breakdown Joanne Catherall's spoken-word confession reveals that she too was unfaithful. The song's title is derived from the chorus, in which both parties in the relationship explain that they are "only human" and "born to make mistakes". The song is a composition in common time with a tempo of 102 beats per minute. It is set in a key of A♭ major, with a chord progression from D♭-E♭-f.

"Human" became the second million-selling and final number-one single for The Human League on the US Billboard Hot 100 (after "Don't You Want Me") and their second chart-topper on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart (after "(Keep Feeling) Fascination"). Jam and Lewis' R&B-based production was also popular on American urban radio, bringing the Human League into the top ten of the U.S. R&B chart for the first time. The song hit #1 in the US; however, in the UK, where R&B was less popular, "Human" peaked at number eight in the UK singles chart.

The Parralox version keep the down-tempo feel, but with an updated minimal synthwave vibe.

Human is dedicated to Diana Rigg and includes Louise Love and John von Ahlen on vocals.

New Video Tuesday - Under the Skin

Under the Skin is a song taken from our new album Genesis. It also shares the title with a science fiction movie directed by Jonathan Glazer, featuring the amazing Scarlett Johansson.
The song started with the title (as most Parralox songs do) and I thought it would be neat to read the script of the movie to see if I could get some lyrical inspiration.
After finding a website which had the script for the movie, I read it and was thinking "I really can't remember this being in the movie, is this a directors cut??" and suddenly realised it was a satire website.
I used the opening line of that script as the template for the madness of the rest of the song. Louise Love also contributed some suitably insane vocals.
A Yamaha DX100 (my first synth, with the Roland SH-101 being purchased shortly after) provided the funk.
Under the Skin is dedicated to Grace Kelly, and features Louise Love on lead vocals, with guest growls by the legendary Jack von Ahlen.

New Video Tuesday - Parralox - Duel (Propaganda)

New Video Tuesday - Parralox - Duel (Propaganda)

New Video Tuesday - Duel (Propaganda Cover)
This weeks "New Video Tuesday" is the classic Propaganda track "Duel", taken from our new album Holiday '19.

"Duel" is the second single by German pop group Propaganda. The song was included on their first album, A Secret Wish which was produced by Stephen Lipson under the supervision of label boss Trevor Horn..

Released in the United Kingdom in April 1985, it became their most successful single in the UK, reaching no. 21. This led to the band making their sole appearance on the flagship BBC music programme, Top of the Pops, in June of that year.

"Duel" was originally released with an alternative version of the track, "Jewel (Rough Cut)" as the B-side. This featured the same lyrics delivered in a more aggressive manner, mainly by Suzanne Freytag, over a backing track of heavy beats and industrial sound effects.

A 12-inch mix, "Jewel (Cut Rough)" extended this with further sound effects, and an instrumental version appeared on the group's debut album, A Secret Wish.

The two approaches to the song were combined in two different tracks. "Bejewelled" played the song through, alternating between the two versions, while "Jewelled", on the remix album Wishful Thinking, combined elements of both, with the melodies of "Duel" playing alongside the rhythms of "Jewel".

The Parralox version combines elements of both original versions, with a predominantly slower (half) tempo throughout.

Duel is dedicated to Sean M Carroll PhD and includes Louise Love on lead vocals, with John von Ahlen on BVs.
